Jacqui Nelson: BETWEEN LOVE AND LIES

I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for new authors and when I ran across Jacqui about a year ago, I discovered someone with a rare talent. I call her a “Word-Painter” because that’s what she is. The vivid pictures she draws by using colorful words and phrases are amazing. I’m so envious of her talent. Jacqui won the prestigious Golden Heart Award for Between Heaven and Hell that Romance Writers of America gives every year. I’m very proud to put my name on the cover of her newest.

BetweenLoveandLiesIn a town ruled by sin, will he earn her love or her lies?

Dodge City, Kansas – 1877

Sadie Sullivan lost everything when a herd of longhorn cattle bound for Dodge City trampled and destroyed her farm. Now she works in Dodge—one of the most wicked and lawless towns in the West—at the Northern Star saloon. But her survival in this new world of sin and violence depends on maintaining a lie so deadly it could end her life before the town of Dodge can.

The one man capable of unraveling all of Sadie’s secrets is Noah Ballantyne, the Texan rancher whose herd destroyed her home. Back in town and taking up the role of deputy alongside legendary lawman Bat Masterson, Noah vows he won’t leave until he’s made things right. But with the saloon’s madam unwilling to release Sadie and a rich cattle baron wanting her as well, the odds aren’t in favor of finding love…or leaving town alive.

Jacqui Nelson: BETWEEN LOVE AND LIES — 58 Comments

  1. Linda, I’m in complete agreement with you. Jacqui has a rare talent and her writing is just amazing. She’s been working on this book for quite awhile, so I know it will be AWESOME. I can’t wait to read it, and I’m rushing out right now to preorder my copy.

We were GH finalists together the year she won in 2010, and she was one of my writing partners with another GH finalist (Jennifer Jakes) on the first book in the Steam! series, Passion’s Prize (which includes three interwoven novellas). She’s terrifically talented, as well as being kind and generous. She’s always smiling and so sweet… Well, except when you room with her and she wakes up in the middle of the night thinking she’s being attacked by an ax murderer. Then, watch out! Inside joke. :))

Good luck with your new release, Jacqui! See you soon over at Get Lost in a Story.

    • Hi Elisabeth! Thank you for coming over. And so early, wow! I’ll bet you have some great stories about Jacqui. 🙂 You never really know someone until you room with them. 🙂 It’s so refreshing to see friends who lift each other up and support them in all they do. Unfortunately often in this business envy sometimes takes over and we become like crabs in a bucket. As one crab climbs to the top of the rim, the others grab him and pull him down. I’m really blessed to count you and Jacqui among close friends. I respect and admire both of you and want you to succeed. I can’t tell you enough what you mean to me. You both are terrific writers.

I loved Fugitive Hearts! That story is still lingering in my mind. I can’t wait for your next release. I enjoy walking this wonderful journey with you. Wishing you much success, dear friend!

  2. Thank you Linda for inviting me to be your guest and for your sweet words on my writing! And thank you Elisabeth as well! One of the best things about being a Golden Heart award finalist was meeting you, Jennifer and the other nominees – and forming lifelong friendships. I’m so glad we connected as well, Linda. It’s incredible fun connecting with other authors and readers. I’m a big fan of both your writing! For my own writing, I always see my stories as pictures (or movies) in my mind, but boy is it challenging finding the right words to match that picture! I hope I’ve succeeded in showing how “Between Love & Lies” played out in my head, and that readers will enjoy Sadie and Noah’s adventure in Dodge City.

    • Hi Jacqui! Consider this your second home. I love having you here. We’re kindred souls who are walking this leg of a journey together. Who knows? Maybe our paths will take us in the same direction forever. If so, I would be very blessed.

I, too, see my stories as a movie. And I agree that it’s often very difficult to get that movie down into words. I’m reminded of a quote I once heard by another writer after receiving a compliment on a bestselling book. He said, “If only you could’ve seen what was in my head.” All we can do is keep trying. But that’s the fun, isn’t it?

I’m so very proud to put my name on your book. You’re a wonderful writer and I admire your talent.

I know Between Love and Lies will be everything you’d hoped. I hope you enter this one in the RITA!

Wishing you the stars not only in writing, but in every aspect of your life! Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this. 🙂

      • I’m honored to walk this journey with your, Linda! Your company will make it a mighty fine walk. I picked up the book you mentioned: “Word Painting” by Rebecca McClanahan. Can’t wait to have a bit more time, and then I can curl up on the sofa and read 🙂

  3. I’ve been reading Jacqui’s novels and novelettes for a while now. They never disappoint. Great covers and a story that keeps you reading. What more can you ask for?

    • Thank you for your compliments on my writing as well, Sharron! My book cover was created by the talented Kim Killion. I asked Kim to simply “make it orange,” because I wanted a different color from my previous release “Between Heaven & Hell,” which was green. When Kim showed me what she’d done with all the shades of brown, red and orange (along with the cover model’s hair changed from brown to red to match my heroine Sadie’s red hair) I was amazed and over-the-moon happy 🙂

      • Jacqui, that cover really catches the eye. It’s just gorgeous. Being a Taurus and loving earthy colors, the browns, oranges and reds soothe my soul. It’s really breathtaking.

    • Hi Sharron! Thank you so much for coming. It’s great to see you. You’re absolutely right. Great cover, characters that spring to life on the page and words that thrill your heart make for a thrilling read. Jacqui’s stories do all that. I hope you remain a fan forever.

I’ve entered you in the drawing the gift card. Good Luck!

    • Thank you, Amy, for the pre-order and for dropping by to comment! So happy we were also fellow Golden Heart nominees (in 2013) and became friends. Hope to see you next year at the RWA national conference!

    • Hi Amy! Thank you for dropping by. I love seeing new faces. I see you belong to the Jacqui Nelson fan club too. 🙂 It’s a great club to be in.

I’ve entered you in the drawing for the gift card. Good Luck!

    • Amy, thank you so much for coming by! It’s great that you could join our party. Thank you for preordering Jacqui’s book. That’s great. But how could you pass up a deal like that?

I’ve entered you in the drawing for the gift card. Good Luck!

  4. Linda, you nailed it. Jacqui Nelson is an exceptionally talented writer and she brings the wild west alive with her prose. Her stories of love and adventure are gripping and hold me to the page. I can’t wait to read her latest.
    Jo-Ann Carson

    • Thanks, Jo-Ann! Very happy to count you as my friend and, as of last week, my #RSsos Sister of Suspense! Looking forward to continuing to share the adventure of being an author with you.

    • Hi Jo-Ann! Thank you for coming over to read about Jacqui newest. I’m thrilled to have you. I see we’re in total agreement about Jacqui. She is one of the most talented writers I’ve seen. I love being around her and I’m hoping some of that “word painting” skill rubs off on me!

I’ve entered you in the drawing for the gift card. Good Luck!

  5. Finally, I’ve been waiting and waiting! Linda, thank you for your support and belief of Jacqui! I’ve got my copy and can’t wait for August 30th! To great sales for both of you!

    • Thank you so much for pre-ordering “Between Love & Lies,” Donnell, and for dropping by to comment! The support of my fellow Golden Heart nominees (can’t use the word “sisters” because we have one brother in the 2010 Unsinkable group) is truly a priceless gift 🙂

    • Hi Donnell! I’m so happy to see you. Thank you for coming to read about Jacqui’s newest. She never disappoints. Each story is richer and deeper than the last. Her stories linger in your mind like a fine wine that’s been aged to perfection. I’m so happy to lend my name to hers. It’s just a real pleasure.

I’ve entered you in the drawing. Good Luck!

  6. Congratulations, Jacqui on another fabulous book! (I know it will be fabulous because they always are!) Can’t wait to read it! Love the cover, too. Best of luck xx

    • Thank you Chris (my Lucky 13 Golden Heart sister) for joining us all the way from Australia! Hope you enjoy Sadie and Noah’s story. I can’t wait to read more of your stories, but you’re such a quick writer it’s hard to keep up. You are inspirational, my friend!

    • Hi Chris, thank you for coming. It’s great to have you. I’ve entered you in the drawing for the gift card. Good Luck!!

    • Great to see you here, Lynda (my Unsinkable GH sister)! Feels like I haven’t seen you in such a very long time. Maybe we’ll both be able to attend the RWA conference next summer and catch up in style!

  9. Jacqui has a gift for creating strong individual characters and scenes that bring the old west to life.
I’ve already pre-ordered and will be waiting for the next in this series.
    Congrats, Jacqui!

    • I have great ideas for the next book in this series! Readers will meet Lewis (the hero of book #2) fairly early in book #1 before he heads off for his own adventure. Thanks for dropping by to comment and for your pre-order, Marjorie!

  10. I am equally awed by your word-painting talent, Jacqui! So proud and happy that your GH-winning book release is right around the corner. The world needs more YOU!!!! 🙂 Congrats, my dear!

    • Thanks, Darcy! I’m thrilled that I’m now able to share my two Golden Heart nominated Westerns with everyone. I seem to be developing a routine of summer releases what with Between Heaven & Hell (winner of the 2010 GH) releasing last summer & now Between Love & Lies (a finalist in the 2013 GH) releasing this summer. So glad you could drop by to share the event with me. Love being a GH Lucky 13 with you!

  11. Wanted to say hello and best wishes on your launch of Between Love and Lies! I so enjoyed Passion’s Prize with 3 GH 2010 finalists. You guys are doing Great and I’m proud to be part of the unsinkable crew, Mary Lawrence

    • Hello, Mary! Thank you for dropping by and for your praise for the “Passion’s Prize” anthology that I wrote with E.E. Burke and Jennifer Jakes. Love that project and still love the inspiration for it – the TV series, Hell on Wheels.
